“Massachusetts Remembers” will be a concert and ceremony in tribute to America and the heroes and the fallen of that tragic day. We will also honor American service men and women that have, and are, serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. The 2-hour tribute will include: readings, poems, prayers and a time for reflection and remembrance. There will be a special musical program to be performed by the Boston Pops Brass Ensemble and Boston Children’s Chorus.
The concert and ceremony begins at 3:00 pm. All spectators will enter the Oval through bag check/screening entrances. All spectators and bags will be screened before they are permitted on the Oval. Tarps (smaller than 8' x 10'), blankets and folding beach-style chairs are permitted. It is recommended that you arrive early, gates will open at noon.
The day’s program will also embrace the spirit of the “Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.” Signed into law in the spring of 2009, the Act designates September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, and authorizes a sweeping expansion of national service, with the goal of improving the lives of people in the United States. In the words of President Obama, “Put your shoulder to the wheel of service — and if you do, you can look back on the moment when your own story and the American story converged.”
A range of non-profit organizations from across the commonwealth will be represented at the Massachusetts Remembers 9-11 event to enlist volunteers in service to our community.
Also, prominently on display at the event will be a giant mural of the American flag created by Massachusetts school children shortly after September 11th.
The mural, half the size of a football field, is comprised of over 50,000 individual red, white and blue 6 inch tiles of fabric, each possessing a message of peace, hope and patriotism from school children across the commonwealth.
First exhibited at the dedication of the The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, today’s display will mark the flag mural’s return to Boston.
